If you need a lot of early game souls, I would run through and kill Last Giant in FotFG and Dragonrider in Heide's. Then talk to Licia and go Huntsman's copse by moving the path from Majula that goes to Heide's (costs 2000 souls, but it is worth it). Go through and kill the Skeleton Lords and Covetous Demon from next 2 areas along this path.Some hexes do cost souls to cast. The Resonant spells and Climax all do. They require a certain number to be at full strength, and Climax spends all your current Souls, but stops getting benefits at 5000. Personally, it's why I don't use the Resonant spells.
